Common misconceptions of digital media deletion

If you have ever accidentally deleted a folder of file you needed then surely you are aware of how frustrating a problem this can be. Not only have you lost a file it was lost due to your own silly error. This is bad enough when the file is a document or important record. But, when the inadvertently deleted file is an image file, the feeling of helpless stupidity is even greater. Oddly few people realize that a file deleted on a PC is not really removed from their computer. When we delete a file the difference is that the space the file resided in is marked as vacant. As long as we don’t overwrite the area with a layer of new data, the information in the file remains intact and can actually be recovered fairly easily.

There are of course different types of file recovery needed. One approaches photo recovery much differently than one might approach recovery of an email.
